Recap has a comprehensive integration with Poloniex that makes it easy to manage your crypto tax calculations. Connect your Poloniex account to Recap to import your full history and automate your taxes. From 2026, tax authorities are widening the automatic reporting of crypto under frameworks such as the OECD's Cryptoasset Reporting Framework (CARF), so keeping an accurate record matters more than ever.

The legal bit: The information provided in this content does not endorse Poloniex. Furthermore, it does not constitute tax advice. If you are uncertain about any financial or tax-related matters, we strongly recommend seeking guidance from a qualified tax professional. Additionally, you may utilise our accountant and professional advisor sharing features.

Why Poloniex tax can be difficult to calculate manually

Poloniex is one of the longer-running exchanges and it has always leaned towards active, altcoin-heavy trading. That is exactly what makes its tax position hard to pin down by hand. A few things tend to trip people up:

  • A deep, long history. Accounts can go back many years across a wide range of assets, and every disposal is measured against a cost-basis pool built from that entire record.
  • Heavy crypto-to-crypto trading. Poloniex is built around coin-for-coin pairs, and each of those trades is a disposal even though no ordinary money changes hands.
  • Staking and earn rewards. Rewards are generally treated as income, valued at the moment you receive each one, and they arrive as a steady drip that is easy to overlook.
  • Old and delisted assets. A long-standing account can hold coins that were later delisted or renamed, which makes an accurate cost history harder to rebuild from exports by hand.

How to import your Poloniex data into Recap

Connect your Poloniex account to Recap by API and we import your full history automatically, including trades, staking and earn rewards, deposits and withdrawals, however far back your account goes. Recap classifies and values every entry with our fair-market valuation engine and applies the tax rules for your jurisdiction, separating what is income from what is a capital gain.

How are Poloniex transactions taxed?

Tax treatment depends on the transaction type and where you are tax resident. Here is how the main Poloniex activities are generally treated:

Transaction typeCGT disposalCGT acquisitionIncome
DepositsCGT disposal: noCGT acquisition: noIncome: no
WithdrawalsCGT disposal: noCGT acquisition: noIncome: no
Buying crypto with fiatCGT disposal: noCGT acquisition: noIncome: no
Crypto to cryptoCGT disposal: yesCGT acquisition: noIncome: no
Selling crypto for fiatCGT disposal: yesCGT acquisition: noIncome: no
Staking and earn rewardsCGT disposal: noCGT acquisition: noIncome: yes
Transferring between your own accountsCGT disposal: noCGT acquisition: noIncome: no

This table shows how Recap classifies each transaction type by default. Some treatments — such as the acquisition cost used for airdrops — are configurable in Recap. This is general information, not tax advice; consult a qualified tax professional about your circumstances.

Selling crypto for fiat and swapping one crypto asset for another are disposals for capital gains purposes, each measured against your cost-basis pool. Staking and earn rewards are generally treated as income at the value you receive them, with any later disposal of those coins also potentially creating a capital gain. Transfers between your own accounts and wallets are not disposals.

Refer to our tax guides for a more detailed look at crypto tax rules.

What's in your Poloniex tax report

Recap turns your full Poloniex history into a single tax report: capital gains, losses and income worked out under the rules for your jurisdiction, high-volume and crypto-to-crypto trading pooled correctly, staking and earn rewards valued on the day they arrived, and a clear year-by-year summary you can file yourself or hand straight to your accountant.

Common Poloniex tax challenges and how Recap solves them

Poloniex accounts produce a few recurring tax problems, especially older and active ones. Here is how Recap handles each one:

  • A long, deep history. Years of activity across many assets are slow to reconstruct. Recap imports the whole record and pools every disposal into a single cost-basis position.
  • Crypto-to-crypto trades. Coin-for-coin trades are disposals, not simple swaps. Recap calculates the gain or loss on each one automatically.
  • Staking and earn rewards. Rewards land as many small income events. Recap values each one at the point you receive it, so none are missed.
  • Delisted or renamed coins. Old assets can be hard to track by hand. Recap identifies and values them so your cost history stays accurate.

Why Poloniex users choose Recap

Poloniex users often choose Recap because a long-running, altcoin-heavy account carries a lot of tax to track: years of coin-for-coin trades, staking and earn rewards as income, and older assets on top. Rather than rebuilding all of that by hand, you can connect by API and see your gains, losses and income reconciled in one report, ready to file or share with your accountant.
